Is CBD Oil Safe for Kids?

CBD oil has various benefits, such as improving mood and reducing high anxiety levels. Furthermore, older and younger folks have widely embraced it and have opted to incorporate it into their daily routines. However, there has been a concern about whether children can also use CBD. This article will highlight CBD and whether it’s safe for kids.

Cannabidiol (CBD) has grown more popular in recent years. This could be attributed to the hemp legalization in 2018, which increased CBD oil processing. CBD oil is available in various formulations, such as CBD gummies, capsules, and tinctures. Athletes use CBD oil to reduce muscle pains and inflammation. Additionally, drug addicts use CBD oil to curb smoking urges. However, whether CBD oil is safe for kids remains a matter that should be keenly considered. Furthermore, since CBD is closely associated with marijuana which is generally psychoactive, it is important to understand the effects of CBD, its difference from marijuana, and whether your kids should consume CBD.

Is CBD Oil Safe for Kids?

Analyzing CBD: Is It Worth the Hype?

CBD is a cannabinoid that is obtained primarily from hemp and can also be obtained from marijuana. Hemp and marijuana are plant strains of the cannabis plant. Additionally, hemp contains higher CBD levels, while marijuana contains higher tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) levels.

CBD is non-psychoactive and therefore does not cause any euphoric effects. However, THC is highly psychoactive and causes the “high” sensation experienced after using cannabis. Hemp also contains other cannabinoids, such as CBG (cannabigerol) and CBC (cannabichromene). It also contains other essential chemical ingredients, such as terpenes and flavonoids. Terpenes have anti-inflammatory properties that reduce muscle pains and inflammation.

Is CBD Oil Safe for Kids?

Parents are becoming more open-minded and are willing to purchase CBD oil and use it on their kids. However, to determine whether CBD oil is safe for kids, we must consider:

    Forms of CBD

CBD gummies are chewy edibles infused with a precise amount of CBD oil. They are popular because they are delicious, easily customizable, and they can easily be prepared locally. Additionally, they are administered orally, and the dosage is fixed. Therefore, you would not need to struggle calculating a required dosage, although it is more difficult to switch up your dose than CBD tinctures.

CBD capsules are pill-like substances that contain a precise amount of CBD oil. They have a gelatin outer casing and have no particular flavor or taste. They are also administered orally, taking longer (30 – 45 minutes) to be absorbed into the bloodstream. This is because the gut must process the capsules before being absorbed into the bloodstream.

CBD tinctures are CBD oils with an alcohol base. They are administered sublingually and are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream since they don’t have to be processed by the gut. However, they don’t have a precise dosage on the product label. Therefore, seek medical advice about the right CBD dosage to consume.

    Effects of CBD

There are several conditions in children which can be alleviated by using CBD oil. These include autism, anxiety, and epilepsy. However, further research should be conducted on the efficacy of CBD oil in alleviating such conditions. Learn more about taking cbd oil taken under the tongue

According to Khalsa et al. (2021), CBD has anti-depressive properties that reduce high stress and anxiety in children. Some children struggle with sleep due to higher anxiety levels. This may lead to insomnia, affecting their physical and cognitive performance. CBD triggers the production of higher serotonin levels which reduce high-stress levels by reducing cortisol hormone levels. Cortisol hormone is also referred to as the “stress hormone.” Despite it making us more alert in hostile situations, excess levels can cause chronic stress, thus reducing our physical performance and impacting our mental stamina and capabilities.

Pamplona et al. (2018) found that CBD oil can also be used to reduce symptoms of epilepsy. Furthermore, the FDA recommended Epidiolex: a drug that was tried, tested, and approved to alleviate two rare forms of epilepsy. However, purchasing CBD oil from local and online stores does not guarantee that it will reduce epileptic symptoms in children.

Epidiolex also has several side effects, such as:

    • Diarrhea
    • Rashes
    • Reduced appetite
    • Insomnia
    • Panic attacks
    • Depression

Fleury-Teixeira et al. (2019) established that CBD could be used to improve symptoms of autism in autistic children. Such symptoms include seizures, rage attacks, and restlessness. However, several side effects could occur, such as a reduced appetite and sleepiness. Carefully administer CBD oil to these children to minimize these side effects.

    Other Health Benefits of CBD

According to Atalay et al. (2020), CBD has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce muscle pains and inflammation.

Hegazy et al. (2019) concluded that CBD has analgesic properties that reduce muscle spasms and soreness.

Jastrząb et al. (2021) added that CBD has anti-oxidant properties that improve skin health by alleviating the radicals produced by the body that cause fine lines and wrinkles on the skin.

Possible Risks of Using CBD Oil for Children

CBD oil may produce several side effects, which include insomnia, rashes, agitation, aggressive behavior, diarrhea, general body weakness, and elevated liver enzymes.

Furthermore, CBD products are highly unregulated. Therefore, it’s more difficult for parents to know which high-quality product. Furthermore, several CBD brands in the market offer lucrative deals to customers. However, not all brands are genuine, and fake CBD oil causes other side effects such as migraines, nausea, and vomiting.

Avoid administering CBD to your child if interacting with other medications. CBD interacts with other medications and may affect the functionality of the enzymes required to metabolize drugs in your system.

Some products have higher THC levels than recommended. Therefore, they cause psychoactive effects, negatively affecting children by increasing their anxiety levels.

Therefore, more research is needed to verify the efficacy of CBD oil in children.

How to Purchase High-Quality CBD Oil

    • Read the customer reviews
    • Confirm the hemp source
    • Confirm whether the product has undergone intensive independent third-party testing
    • Confirm the extraction method, preferably CO2 extraction, since it maintains higher purity and potency levels
    • Read the product label and ensure that the product does not contain any harmful substances, such as heavy metals and pesticides.

    The Bottom Line

CBD oil has various benefits, such as reducing anxiety, alleviating muscle pain and inflammation, and reducing stress levels. However, there is limited research on whether it is safe for kids. CBD oil can be used to alleviate several conditions that majorly occur in kids. For example, Epidiolex is a drug approved for treating rare forms of epilepsy. Additionally, CBD alleviates anxiety and autistic symptoms. There are various forms of CBD, such as CBD gummies, capsules, and tinctures. CBD gummies and capsules are administered orally, while tinctures are administered sublingually. However, it is important to consult a doctor on the right CBD dosage to administer, regardless of the CBD formulation.

Using CBD to alleviate epilepsy can also cause various side effects, such as restlessness, diarrhea, rashes, and general body weakness. While purchasing CBD oil, remember to confirm the extraction method, the hemp source, and whether the product has undergone intensive independent third-party testing.
