    Differences Between CBG And CBD

What is CBG? What is the main difference in structure and availability between CBD and CBG? What are some of the similarities between the two compounds? What are some of the side effects? This article explains the differences between CBD and CBD.

CBG and CBD are compounds derived from the same plant, the hemp or cannabis sativa plant. These two compounds are closely related but differ in some ways. Much research is being undertaken to understand these compounds and their promising ability to treat chronic diseases. Some products in the market contain a combination of these compounds plus other cannabinoids. Hemp compounds work well when combined through a phenomenon known as entourage effects. CBG is not as famous as THC and CBD. However, CBG is coming up so fast. Scientists and consumers are interested in it due to its many special benefits. This article will help you to distinguish the CBG and CBD. To understand the compounds' differences, individuals must first understand what these compounds are.

    What is CBD?

CBD means cannabidiol, the second most abundant compound in the hemp plant. The most abundant compound is THC, which makes cannabis users feel high. CBD is not psychoactive like THC. CBD is isolated from the other compound through the use of CO2. It can be taken sublingually or applied topically. Manufacturers have invented many ways to ingest it, such as adding it to foods and drinks. There are three types of CBD; Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolates. Full-spectrum CBD contains all cannabinoids, including THC, and contains an entourage effect when an individual consumes it. Hermush et al. (2022) explained that broad-spectrum CBD contains all the cannabinoids THC excluded and makes an individual feel the entourage effect but does not make one feel high, while CBD isolates contain CBD only. However, THC in CBD products does not exceed 0.3%. This amount is too low to cause any psychoactive effects.

    What is CBG?

CBG means cannabigerol.  It is one of the many cannabinoids in the hemp plant. It is found in smaller amounts compared to CBD and CBG. A full-grown hemp plant can only produce 1% of this compound. However, when harvested from a young hemp plant, CBG can be relatively high. Currently, modifications have been made whereby there are special hemp plants such as super glue CBG specifically grown for the production of CBG. Sevtsuk et al. (2019) stated that CBG products are still rare in the market and are very expensive, and individuals can get CBG from full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD products. CBG is becoming popular due to its potential ability to treat chronic diseases such as colon cancer. It contains many properties such as anti-inflammatory, therapeutic and anti-bacterial that can treat other minor and major ailments.

    Differences Between CBG and CBD?

Right from the definition, it has been seen that these compounds differ. The following are other ways in which an individual can differentiate these compounds.

CBD and CBG are different in their molecular structure. It means that the two compounds' arrangement of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen atoms is different. If the compound structures of the two are drawn, the shapes of these two differ; they would look different but closely related. It makes the two compounds work differently, which is why they do not treat similar diseases. These differences in the atoms also make them have different degrees of solubility in water.

    Effects On Appetite

According to Cabrera et al. (2021), CBG increases animal appetite. A study on rats showed that rats took double the amount of food after ingesting CBG. Research has found high chances of reduced appetite after taking CBD.

    Interactions With Other Drugs

CBD can interact with some pharmaceutical medications. If you are under medication, it is advisable to seek advice from a qualified doctor before taking CBD products. CBG is not known to interact with medications. However, seeking advice before taking CBG supplements is advisable if you are under medication.

    Anti-Bacterial Properties

Even though CBD and CBG have similarities in their properties, CBD does not possess anti-bacterial properties. Aqawi et al. (2020) stated that CBG is rich in anti-bacterial properties that enable it to treat bacterial infections. Bacteria do not become resistant to CBG, making it eliminate stubborn bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. CBD does not have this ability.

CBD is more available than CBG. CBD is the second most abundant cannabinoid. CBG is found in smaller amounts. A hemp plant that has achieved maturity can only produce 1% of CBG. There are other ways of increasing CBG production, such as extracting it from a young plant.

    Similarities Between CBG and CBD?

Both CBG and CBD are non-psychoactive. It means they cannot make you feel high even when ingested in a high dosage. The main compound behind feeling high is THC, derived from the hemp plant. Even though CBG and CBD products may contain THC, it is in a negligible amount that may not have the effects. Combining cannabinoids improves their effectiveness in treating diseases.

Both CBG and CBG can counteract the effects of THC. Ingesting THC makes you feel high and alters your state of mind. If you have ingested it accidentally or want to reduce its effects, CBG and CBD can counteract them. You can consider taking an isolate of CBG or CBD as they are more concentrated with the respective compounds. CBD and CBG are extracted from the hemp plant using the same method. The most common way of isolating the two compounds is using CO2 under very high temperatures and pressure. This method is expensive, and it uses expensive equipment too.

CBG and CBD have some similar properties, such as anti-inflammatory and therapeutic. These properties enable the two compounds to treat some conditions such as chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. CBD and CBG seem to be well tolerated by the body. Therefore, they do not have serious side effects. The most common side effects are changes in appetite and fatigue.

CBG and CBD are derived from the same plant. They differ in structure, properties, and how they interact with other drugs. CBG and CBD have some similarities, such as being non-psychoactive, counteract the effects of CBD, and can treat some similar ailments. It is advisable to seek medical guidance before taking either CBG or CBD, especially if you are under medication. Before individuals consume these two compounds, they should consider doctors' prescriptions. And upon purchasing, individuals are advised to access organic compounds as they are safer than the others.
