    Hemp-Derived Vs. Cannabis Derived CBD

    CBD differs depending on the part of the cannabis sativa plant it is extracted from. Species of cannabis Sativa plants such as hemp, cannabis, indica, and marijuana contain different compositions of CBD and THC. However, most people can't spot the difference. Therefore, they allow easy absorption of CBD into the human system. The public interest in CBD and its ready availability have grown due to its ability to show health benefits like treating anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, inflammation, memory loss, and pain. Scientific studies show CBD works with the endocannabinoid system to maintain homeostasis in tackling the imbalances above.

    What Is Hemp-derived CBD?

    Hemp-derived CBD is extracted from the Cannabis Sativa plant. People have grown it for centuries to make ropes, sails, clothes, food, and brooms until they discovered a healthy compound called CBD, which has proven effective. Cruz et al. (2021) explained that the hemp plant contains a high concentration of the compound and a low level of delta-8 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). The CBD content makes it best suited for industrial uses in deriving CBD-infused products like oil, CBD topical, gummies, edibles, and capsules for medicinal uses.

    What is Cannabis-derived CBD?

    Cannabis plants can be classified into marijuana, cannabis indica, and hybrid. They have thicker foliage and flowers than hemp and are mainly grown and consumed for their intoxicating properties. Cannabis-derived CBD consists high level of THC content, unlike hemp plants that contain less THC. Cannabis-derived CBD products have an average potency of CBD between 12-14 % compared to THC content which varies above 20%.

    Differences Between Hemp-derived and Cannabis-derived CBD

    Cannabis and hemp contain CBD and THC, with other cannabinoids, such as terpenes. The major differences are the composition and the amount of each cannabinoid they contain. CBD derived from both plants can differ in terms of legality, psychoactive effects, entourage effects, organic nutrients, and chemical composition

    The Legality of the CBD

    One of the differences between hemp and cannabis CBD is how federal law treats them. According to Mead (2017), the 2018 farm firm bill made it legal to manufacture, grow and sell hemp-derived products containing less than 0.3 percent THC in the USA. However, cannabis-derived products in many plants contain more than the recommended percent of THC and are not federally legal. Cannabis-derived CBD is allowed for medicinal and recreational use in some states, while it is completely illegal in others. Even traveling across the state with possession of marijuana CBD is prohibited. People perceive hemp-derived CBD to be more of the counter medication readily available in any drug shop, while cannabis-derived CBD, mostly marijuana, is more of a prescribed drug

    Psychoactive Effects

    THC is largely known to cause psychoactive effects since it is responsible for the highness and addiction of its users. Li et al. (2018) said that CBD, unlike THC, is non-psychoactive and non-dependency in delivering its benefits to people. The difference in concentration of THC and CBD causes the hemp and cannabis CBD to differ in psychoactive properties. Cannabis-derived CBD, in many cases, contains traces of THC, while hemp-derived CBD has no or less than 0.3% of THC. Therefore, CBD extracted from the hemp plant does not cause highness to its users.

    The entourage effect combines CBD benefits with other minor cannabinoids like CBD and terpenes, which are pronounced to prolong the overall effects of CBD. THC plays a crucial role in providing these effects. Therefore, most manufactured drugs prescribed by doctors mainly consist of cannabis-derived CBD. Hemp CBD provides entourage benefits; however, it is limited since it composes a high concentration of CBD (70%) and a small level of other cannabinoids, including THC.

Cannabis plants like marijuana do not contain many organic nutrients like hemp, but the mineral composition is similar.

    CBD interacts with the brain receptors to bind with anandamide, allowing the hormone serotonin to be released. Low production of the hormone increases stress and anxiety.

    Can Be Used in Cancer Treatments

    They help to alleviate vomiting and nausea, which are cancer medicinal symptoms increasing the chances of survival since cancer patients tend to give up on medication due to these symptoms.

    Improves Skin Complexity

    CBD interacts with skin oil glands to increase oil production and moisturize skin. Additionally, they release skin proteins like collagen, which help remove skin wrinkles and dirt.

    Conclusion

    CBD has recently gained a lot of demand due to its healthier benefits like reducing pain, anxiety, inflammation, and depression and inducing good sleep, without causing serious side effects like dependency or highness. However, CBD can be derived from the hemp plant, which has a high concentration of CBD and low level of THC, or cannabis plant, which have a high level of THC compared to CBD. Hemp-derived CBD has no traces of THC and contains organic nutrients like amino acids and vitamins, thus crucial in the health sector. On the other hand, cannabis-derived CBD may lack organic nutrients, but it has entourage effects from THC and other minor cannabinoids.
