CBD oil is becoming popular today. Stella et al. (2021) commented that it contains properties that help treat various diseases and conditions such as arthritis, psoriasis, dermatitis, PMS, nausea, chronic pain, and epilepsy.

Attard et al. (2018) defined CBD as a compound derived from the hemp plant. This compound is generally safe as it is not psychoactive like THC. However, some CBD products may have a little amount of THC, which is harmless. Combining THC and CBD may be more effective in treating some diseases. There are three types of CBD oil: Broad-spectrum, full-spectrum, and CBD isolate. Broad-spectrum CBD oil contains all cannabinoids apart from THC. The full spectrum contains all cannabinoids, including THC. However, the amount of THC does not exceed 0.3%. This amount is too low to cause any high feeling. CBD isolates contain only CBD. You can purchase CBD oil online or from the local market.

    What is Arthritis?

According to Bullock et al. (2018), it is a very common disease that affects the joints. It causes swelling and tenderness in one or more joints. This swelling and tenderness cause pain, redness, decreased motion, and stiffness, which may worsen as age progresses. This is the main reason why this disease attacks mostly aged people. There are two common types of arthritis: Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is where the immune system attacks some joints in the body. It begins with the lining of the joint and later to the entire joint. Osteoarthritis attacks the cartilage, breaking it down. Cartilage is the hard tissue that covers the end of the born. Most people do not recover completely from this disease. The treatments given for arthritis aim to reduce pain to improve the quality of life.

Who is at Risk of Getting Arthritis?

Some people are at higher risk of getting arthritis than others. Below are some factors that increase these chances.

The older you get, the higher the chances of getting arthritis. Many types of arthritis attack the aged, such as gout, rheumatoid, and osteoarthritis. As age progress, the body's immune system declines. This increases the vulnerability to diseases.

    Family History

Some types of arthritis run through generations. If grandparents or parents have this disorder, the offspring will likely develop. Therefore, you should have a regular checkup to identify the problem earlier.

Excess weight puts stress on the joints. The most affected areas are the knees, spine, and hips. The stress on these joints may cause wearing out of cartilage and eventually cause arthritis. Always check your weight to ensure it is within the limit. If you have excess weight can embark on various exercises to help you reduce some weight.

González-Chica et al. (2018) noted that Rheumatoid arthritis is more common in women. On the other hand, men are more likely to develop gout. More research is needed to explain the relationship between sex and these types of arthritis.

    Previous Unrelated Joint Injuries

If you had an injury in your joint, maybe while playing, you are at risk of developing osteoarthritis.

Long exposure to cold may cause arthritis. When cold gets into the joints, it may facilitate the wearing out of the cartilage.

    Can CBD Oil treat Arthritis?

Khaleghi (2020) showed that CBD oil could improve arthritis symptoms. One of the major symptoms of arthritis is pain. CBD oil can relieve both chronic and mild pains related to arthritis. CBD oil can also reduce inflammation caused by arthritis. The above research also shows that it works well in reducing anxiety and improving sleep in patients with this condition. Due to chronic pain caused by arthritis, patients lack sleep and may sometimes go into depression due to excess anxiety. However, as the Food and Drug Administration does not back such claims, there is a need for a rigorous study to confirm if CBD can relieve pain in humans. Studies involving animals showed great improvement in relieving arthritis pain.

Topical application is often used in treating arthritis pain than taking the oil orally. The oil reduces inflammation. The most effective CBD in treating arthritis pain contains some amount of THC. Both compounds are more effective than the use of CBD only. Therefore, buy full-spectrum CBD oil when expecting to treat arthritis. However, no conclusive evidence proves that CBD products can treat arthritis pain in humans.

How does CBD Oil treat Pain?

According to Caterina (2014), cannabinoids interact with pain and inflammatory receptors in the body. The interaction affects how the receptors respond to the signals they receive. Consequently, the pain is reduced. CBD oil also contains antidepressant properties. These properties reduce anxiety and improve sleep improving the patient’s quality of life.

Precautions and Side Effects of CBD Oil

Various studies have shown that CBD can interact with other drugs. Therefore, consult a qualified healthcare provider before taking this product if you are under medication. There is no reliable information on CBD's effects on infants and unborn babies. Therefore, pregnant and lactating mothers should avoid CBD oil unless prescribed by a doctor. Some people who take CBD oil orally have reported side effects such as drowsiness, fatigue, and diarrhea. However, these effects are mostly linked to overdosing. Since there is no universal dosage for CBD oil in treating pain, start with a low amount and increase gradually to reach the maximum. In rare cases, CBD can cause liver damage.

Arthritis is a common inflammatory disease that attacks the joints. Some people are at higher risk of getting arthritis; these include the aged, people living in cold areas, and those born by parents with arthritis. Excess weight may also increase the chances of arthritis. CBD oil contains anti-inflammatory and anti-depressant properties. Anti-inflammatory properties can treat chronic pain related to arthritis. On the other hand, the anti-depressant properties help treat anxiety and improve sleep, improving the patient's quality of life. You can apply CBD topicals to the affected joint or take the oil orally. However, ingesting CBD oil may have side effects such as drowsiness, diarrhea, and tiredness. In rare cases, it might cause liver damage.
