What Is the Difference Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil?

Since the legalization of CBD by the FDA, more people have started using CBD products because of their benefits to the human body. This article explains one of the most exceptional CBD products, CBD oil and hemp oil, and their differences.

CBD oil and hemp seed oil are sourced from cannabis but are different parts of the plant. The hemp seeds are used to formulate hemp oil. in comparison, cannabidiol oil is derived from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of the hemp and cannabis plants. Hemp and CBD oils are ingestible and can be infused into various food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical products. However, consumers need to note that CBD oil and hemp oil are two different products.

What Is the Difference Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil?

    Defining Hemp Oil

According to Paul et al. (2019), hemp seed oil is derived from hemp seeds with an exquisite nutty flavor. Hemp oil contains about 70-90% of healthy polyunsaturated fats. It contains high amounts of linolenic and linoleic acids, omega-3 essential fatty acids, and tocopherols. Subject to the processing and handling of hemp seeds, hemp seed oil may have trace or intense levels of CBD oil and THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient in the hemp plant. However, it is vital to note that most states accept products that contain 0.3% of THC since it will not cause any psychoactive effects on the user.

    What is CBD Oil?

Leszko et al. (2021) argued that CBD is one of the major organic compounds of the cannabis plant. CBD oil is formulated from the leaves, flowers, and stalks of the hemp plant of cannabis and hemp plants. However, since most states have strict laws on products derived from cannabis, the majority of CBD oils are sourced from hemp. Cannabinoids merge with the endocannabinoid system in the body to control major physiological processes in the human body, like sleep, mood, and immune functions.

Differences Between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil

    Chemical Composition

One of the best ways to highlight the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil is their ingredients and label. Both oils are derived from the hemp plant, a specific part of the cannabis plant that contains high amounts of CBD and low amounts of THC, less than 0.3%. Hemp seed oil is sourced from the hemp plant's seeds. Crini et al. (2020) revealed that hemp seed oil is used for cooking an array of dishes and for processing several cosmetic products.

CBD oil is sourced from hemp, the only part of the cannabis plant that contains high amounts of CBD. CBD oil is made from most parts of the hemp plant; flowers, leaves, and stalks. Most often, consumers of CBD oil confuse it with CBD vapes. As much as CBD vapes are akin to CBD oil tinctures, they are formulated purposely for vaping. CBD vapes typically encompass the same ingredients in e-liquids, like flavorings, vegetable glycerin, and propylene glycol. Additionally, they replace nicotine with CBD distillate, CBD distillate, or a water-soluble CBD.

    Production Techniques

Zheljazkov et al. (2021) confirmed that CBD oil is produced from the whole hemp plant using exemplary extraction techniques, while hemp seed oil is fashioned from cold-pressing hemp seeds. Cold pressing is an extraction method that uses a hydraulic press to obtain food or essential oil. CBD oil is derived using the CO2 process, also known as supercritical fluid extraction. Typically, hemp seed oil assumes a dark and green color with a nutty flavor, while CBD oil assumes a dark brown or light gold color with a musky flavor.

    Uses and Purposes

Hemp seed oil is standard in skin care, hair care, and cooking. Giangregorio et al. (2021) explained that CBD oil is an oral tincture comprising CBD and ingested sublingually; under the tongue for faster effects. CBD is the main ingredient of CBD-rich products such as topicals, edibles, etc. On the other hand, CBD vapes are infused with an e-juice encompassing a CBD extract or concentrate. Most often, CBD vapes are crafted from CBD isolate, pure CBD that is water soluble. Other vapes are formulated from a CBD distillate, concentrate or shatter. CBD oil tinctures are not ideal for vaping since they use an oil-based carrier which may be harmful.

    Purchasing Locations

Hemp oil and CBD oil are purchased in food, grocery, and local pharmacies. Nonetheless, most often, both products are sold in varying locations. High-quality CBD oil products are found in online shops and websites since the risk of being duped is less. Hemp seed oil is purchased in local stores and online shops like Amazon. Most of the time, hemp seed oil is advertised as hemp oil, but the ingredients list must mention hemp seed oil. It is essential to note that hemp does not have medicinal properties, unlike CBD oil. However, it is a good source of omegas 9,6, and 3, proteins, and essential fatty acids.

    Pricing

Producing and processing CBD oil is quite expensive compared to hemp seed oil. Therefore, it is fair if it is highly-priced. Any product infused with pure CBD oil will cost the purchaser a dime.

    The Entourage Effect

Regardless of the endless benefits associated with hemp seed oil, it does not cause the entourage effect; all the cannabinoids in CBD merge to produce overwhelming impacts on the body. Hemp oil is formulated from hemp seeds, while CBD oil is derived from the hemp plant's leaves, stalks, and flowers, containing different cannabinoids like terpenes and flavonoids. Hemp seed oil lacks phytonutrients, cannabinoids, and terpenes; therefore no entourage effect.

    Side Effects

    Hemp seed oil does not have any sound side effects. Nonetheless, each individual's body chemistry is different, meaning that while some may experience some setbacks with its use, others may tolerate it well. CBD oil may produce some effects though mild. Some of the side effects may include;

    • Fatigue
    • Diarrhea
    • Dry mouth
    • Drowsiness
    • Increased or decreased appetite

    Conclusion

More consumers are turning to CBD products since their approval by the FDA due to their numerous health benefits. Hemp seed oil and CBD oil come from various sections of cannabis. CBD oil is sourced from the stalks, flowers, and leaves of the hemp and cannabis plants, whereas hemp oil, also known as hemp seed oil, is made from the hemp plant's seeds. Hemp and CBD oils are incorporated into a selection of items, including food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
