Arthritis-related pain has been on the rise in recent years. Most individuals suffer from this condition due to genetic causes or lifestyle diseases like obesity. Novel observational studies show that CBD can relieve arthritis-related pain and reduces inflammation and anxiety. This article explains how CBD oil can help treat arthritis pain.

Cannabis sativa contains several compounds effective for medicinal and therapeutic purposes. CBD and THC are the known cannabinoids extracted from Cannabis. In the US, the cannabis derivative is mainly used as a recreational product. Notably, CBD products were legalized by the 2018 farm bill. However, CBD products should contain below 0.3% of the psychoactive THC. Currently, there are different spectrums of CBD with varying cannabis compounds. Each spectrum dispenses different effects to the body regarding pain, inflammation, and other therapeutic effects.

    What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is extracted from the flowers and seeds of the hemp plant. It is used for different purposes and can be found in different formulations with varying concentrations and potencies. As aforementioned, there are different CBD oil spectrums; isolate and Full Spectrum CBD oil. The difference occurs in the number of compounds composed of these CBD oils. Full-spectrum oil contains all the compounds from the cannabis plant, which include THC, terpenes, flavonoids, and other cannabinoids like CBN and CBT. THC could have psychoactive effects that make due to THC. Broad-spectrum CBD oil contains all the compounds from Cannabis but no THC. In contrast, CBD isolate contains no cannabis derivatives except CBD. It is tasteless, odorless, and the purest of the oils.

    Is CBD Oil Safe?

There is little research on the potential effects and safety of using CBD oil for arthritis. Turna et al. (2020) explained that many individuals tolerate CBD oil. Also, CBD does not cause the 'high' due to lower levels of THC. However, one can experience adverse if wrongly administered. Notably, FDA has not approved CBD oil use; thus, it has to know whether CBD oil is effective for use. To prevent any adverse effects, individuals should seek medical advice prescription.

CBD Oil and Arthritis Pain Relief

CBD oil interacts with the ECS to suppress arthritis pain. ECS is responsible for controlling the body like digestion, sleep, pain, and emotion control. The oil helps prevent endocannabinoids' from breaking down. Marwarwa (2020) explained that CBD oil interacts with CB1 and CB2, which helps in reducing arthritic inflammation and pains since the receptors are involved in joint movements, coordination, and pain.

    CBD Oil as Arthritis Treatment

    Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is common for illnesses and injuries related to arthritis. The pain affects the joints of patients who have arthritis. Gamble et al. (2018) explained that natural pain relief like CBD oil is effective for individuals suffering from arthritis pain.

    Inflammation and Swelling

Joint inflammation is another common symptom of arthritis. Pahwa et al. (2021) explained that CBD oil has anti-inflammatory properties that suppress inflammation related to arthritis.

    Reduced Appetite

Arthritis patients experience weight loss and reduced appetite due to extreme stiffness and pain. The stiffness affects metabolism, quality of life, and mood. The CBD oil is placed under the tongue. The sublingual method allows the oil to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the thin capillaries underneath the tongue. The CBD oil manifests within minutes through sublingual consumption.

These are foods infused with CBD oil. Edibles are ingested with the food and assimilated into the bloodstream through digestion; unlike the sublingual method, the effects manifest slower. Notably, significant components of the oil could diminish during digestion. While the effects manifest after a relatively long period, their effects last longer in the body.

    Inhaling Method

Vape pens allow users to smoke the oil; the oil goes through the lungs before it is absorbed into the blood system.

People who have arthritis and related symptoms can benefit from using CBD oil. The oil helps in reducing the symptoms related to arthritis. Notably, CBD products have not been approved by the FDA; users may obtain sub-standard products from the cannabis market. Hence, users should ensure they buy from credible brands to avoid the adverse effects of sub-standard products. While CBD products have little to zero side effects, improper usage could lead to mild side effects like fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea. Users who experience these side effects should seek medical advice.
